ORAL HYGIENE
It is important to maintain regular professional dental cleanings. At your
cleaning visit, an exam and assessment of your oral condition will be completed
and a treatment plan will be designed for your specific needs. Maintaining
recommended professional dental cleanings as well as proper oral home care helps
to prevent gum disease, tooth decay, and oral malodor (bad breath).
GUM DISEASE
There are two types of periodontal (gum) disease: gingivitis and
periodontitis. These diseases are most commonly caused by poor oral
hygiene and neglect of professional care.
GINGIVITIS: Gingivitis is the first level of gum disease. Plaque and
tartar contain many harmful bacteria, which irritate soft tissues (gums) and
cause infection. The normal healthy mouth also contains bacteria that pose
no threat until they multiply beyond their normal limit due to poor oral
hygiene. With gingivitis, gums become swollen, tender, and red. Gums
will also bleed easily. Gingivitis can be reversed with regular professional
cleanings and proper home care.
PERIODONTITIS: Periodontitis develops when gingivitis is left untreated.
Unlike gingivitis, periodontitis can not be reversed but only stabilized and
maintained. When gingivitis develops into periodontitis, gums "pull away"
from the teeth allowing plaque and tartar (along with their bacteria) to spread
below the gum line. This bacteria and the body's own defense mechanisms
begin to break down the connective tissue and bone that hold teeth in place.
In worst cases, teeth can be lost. However, with proper treatment
periodontitis can be stabilized and maintained in a "resting" state.
If you have suspicion of gum disease, allow us to help you.
Make an appointment today to see one of our dental hygienists and let them
design a treatment plan for you. As always, oral home care should consist
of brushing twice daily and ,yes, flossing daily. A rinsing with an
antibacterial mouthwash such as Listerine or Crest Pro Health is beneficial as
well. Fluoride mouthwashes such as Act are good also.
